Symbolism

Shield.  The light blue shield with eight mullets personify the eight lives rescued from the schooner Cape Horn by Pablo Valent, for which he was awarded the Silver Lifesaving Medal.  The escutcheon’s blue chief with crested waves portrays the hurricane conditions under which the rescue was achieved.  The escutcheon’s red base with two crossed anchors symbolizes the Coast Guard’s duty to overcome the difficulties of rescue at sea and the weight of those carried when in danger.  The crossed anchors also allude to Pablo Valent’s last enlisted grade and specialty rating of Chief Boatswain's Mate.

Crest.  The Port Isabel Lighthouse represents the landmark near Brazos Life-Saving Station, now Station South Padre Island, where Pablo Valent became the first Hispanic-American Officer-in-Charge.  The crossed lightning bolts denote the ship’s new home port of Saint Petersburg, Florida.

Supporters.  The boat hook and oar hearken to the tools of the trade of sailing and rescue services.

Motto: The motto, “EXCELLENCE THROUGH ADVERSITY,” characterizes the dedication and professionalism of the crew to fulfill the rapid rescue and lifesaving needs of military and civilians around the world, while paying tribute to the legacy of support of the United States Coast Guard.  The blue, light blue, and white colors of the scroll imply dominion over the coastal realm.

Seal.  The coat of arms as blazoned in full color on a circular white background, enclosed by a dark blue border edged on the outside with a gold rope, and inscribed “USCGC PABLO VALENT” above and “WPC 1148” below in gold.
